Ending hundreds to thousands of years of dormancy, and following major seismic disturbances in the first months of the year, the Santa Maria volcano (locally known as Gagxanul) erupted October 24 with explosive eruptions for two days. It was the third most powerful volcano in the 20th century. An estimated 6,000 people died.

Eruption was visible as early as 7:00 PM when "lightning and a strong fiery red light" was witnessed coming from the volcano and "noise similar to that of an industrial furnace." By 8:00 PM, witnesses reported seeing "a giant plume of black ash with numerous whirlwinds crossed by thousands of lightning bolts and curved lines of red light," with quaking ground and the sounds of large explosions. (Mars crossed IC about 8:00 PM.)
