Novarupta eruption

Post by Jim Eshelman »

June 6, 1912, about 1:00 PM BET, Katmai National Park, Alaska 58N16'00", 155W09'24"

The most powerful volcanic eruption in the 20th century, lasting 60 hours and releasing 30 times the magma volume of Mount St. Helens in a blast heard (an hour after it occurred) 750 miles away in Juneau.

I find no record of deaths thus far (it is a barely-populated area). Time is from NPS.gov, which wrote, "Around 1 PM on June 6, the skies darkened over Katmai and for the next 60 hours the sun disappeared. The greatest eruption of the 20th century had begun."
