Testing the Hazelrigg-George U.S. chart
Posted: Wed Apr 29, 2020 9:30 am
by Jim Eshelman
Following Steve's lead, I'm going to systematically test what I have long considered the most effective U.S. natal chart. (I'll work slowly as time permits. I'll start with those astrological techniques that are least labor-intensive, then get down to return charts later in the game.)
This is a chart for July 4, 1776, at Independence Hall, Philadelphia (39N56'56", 75W09'00"). Originally, John Hazelrigg worked with a historic note of "shortly past noon" and you can often find these charts discussed as a 12:20 PM time. Hazelrigg and Llewellyn George worked on it over time. I think the "final polish" may have included young Donald Bradley working alongside his boss and patron, Llewellyn George. The final rectified time that came forward, and that I use, is 12:14:42 PM LMT, which is 17:15:18 UT. Here's a copy of the chart I posted here a few years ago.

I won't discuss the chart contents for each event unless I find them noteworthy, but I will assign a score to each, just as I do with the ingresses. Here is the scale that I wrote down to keep some consistency and objectivity to the rating:
+3: Excellent. Outstanding, symbolically pure & eloquent with no contradiction (or none except very minor factors totally overwhelmed by otherwise perfect symbolism). Necessarily involves at least two factors. - Relatively few of these scores would ever be given.
+2: Very Good. Has strong, distinctive indications typical of the event, with no strong contradictions.
+1: Good. On balance, more descriptive of the event than not.
0: Neutral. No strong pro or con factor sufficient to say that the chart leans any particular direction.
0: Mixed. Factors consistent with the event, and factors contrary to the event, are approximately equal in strength with no clear way to tip the balance toward Good or Poor.
-1: Bad (Poor). On balance, more at odds with the event than not.
-2: Very Bad. Has strong, distinctive indications contrary to the nature of the event, with no strong contradictions.
-3: Unacceptable. Irremediably wrong without redemption. Necessarily involves at least two factors. - Relatively few of these would ever be given.
I will use the catalog of events here for each technique studied:
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=4034
Though I have surely studied some of these events in the past with some techniques for this chart, I haven't done anything systematic or thorough - so it's about time I did!
I expect the initial techniques I study (primary angles, for example) will not produce hits for a lot of events since they are quite rare - so we may get a lot of Zero scores along the way ("nothing shows one way or the other"). I'll figure out what to do about that after I see what happens.

Here is a restatement of the events I'm studying (so that I can trim the names & make them more efficient to process).

OBSERVATION: This technique is expected not to produce many hits and, in fact, it didn't. I probably expected more, but the math says there won't be a lot. When there were hits they tended to be good but few were great. Not a lot of confirmation here.
Primary Angles (Naibod in RA)

by Jim Eshelman
We may have the wrong theory of primary movement of the angles, though. (I'd be surprised at that because, in natal work, the method above works very well; but it's worth checking.) I will redo these events using the "Naibod in RA" method. All ratings are for birthplace. Angular contacts to natal and Secondary Progressed positions only.

OBSERVATION: Similar to the last one, this one has few events; but, in contrast to the above look, many of these are much better! - We have to be cautious, because some of the very best - charts through the Civil War and Lincoln's murder, Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima - were almost certainly used by Hazelrigg, George, and Bradley to rectify this time in the first place. However, none of them would have been able to bring Mars right to an angle for 9/11 and its sequelae, then spin to Venus to the same angle for universal marriage rights affirmed. This one has serious advantage (and forces me to keep the "which primary rate" question unresolved in my head).
Solar Arcs

I'm only checking 0 - 90 - 180 aspects, even though I consider the 45 - 135 valid for Solar Arcs in general. We should have very few events without aspects, so most events should get a score - whether positive or negative.

At the same time, the few events that are missing are sometimes startling, given their importance. (I don't count as "missing" where there were no 90° series aspects but were perfectly accurate 45° series aspects, e.g., 9/11.)

OBSERVATION: This is a good showing. It's pretty much what one expects for transits: You can see the broader cycles and movements within which events occur. A few don't shown anything. Most of these are confirmation of the date but only a few concentrate so on angles and Moon to confirm the time (but the few that do so are excellent). -- We might expect to get better results from lunar returns etc. to tighten this transit effect but, in general, these are the sorts of transits that have kept this chart popular for decades.
Secondary Progressions (SNQ)
Posted: Thu Apr 30, 2020 12:54 pm
by Jim Eshelman
I might have skipped Secondary Progressions - partly because historically they work so splendidly with this chart and were surely a strong factor in its rectification. However, this gives the opportunity to check to check the SNQ angles as well and see whether we agree with the refinement of the rectification. - Again, I probably won't list everything, but will list things relevant (pro or con) to the event.

There is no doubt this Chart is a most important USA Chart---proven with Sidereal Astrology techniques. I will gradually be posting about a few of the events in Jim's list with Sidereal Astrology techniques.
