Animal feed additive plant explosion. 10AM, 1-20-2014, southern part of Omaha NE.
Witnesses said there was a loud crack, the back wall of the building fell, and then a large fireball went up. Chunks of concrete and metal debris from a crane fell into the building.
Of 38 people known to have been in the building, 2 were killed, 10 hospitalized, 7 treated and released. Many workers called family from inside the building as they were escaping, and families came to the site. A lot of mother/son reunions shown on local media since a lot of young men work there.
As of 5PM, the Fire Department's search of the building for additional bodies was called off because of high winds blowing sheet metal around, concrete still falling occasionally, and a sharp drop in temperature, from 50 degrees to 20 and occasional snow, causing whiteouts.
As of 10PM, one body had been recovered by a SAR dog team from Lincoln but the fire department shut down the site because of temps in the single digits. All the local media spent most of their newscasts at 4, 5, 6 and 10 on this event, and there were repeated press conferences throughout the day, also covered by all local media. It's a big big story In Omaha.
Charts... I am just over dropbox.
