From the above tabulation, the following leaps out: Luminaries are Libra-Aquarius. Moon and Neptune are foreground, conjoined within 2°26'
mundo, and therefore the leading aspect of the chart. (Mars is in Scorpio.)
Moon more widely aspects Mercury and Jupiter. Sun has no close aspects, but moderately conjoins Mercury and Mars. Besides luminaries, his more important inner planet aspects are Mars opposite Pluto and Venus' trines to Uranus-Pluto. He has important outer planet aspects also (Ju-Sa&Ur, Sa-Ur, Ur-Pl.
Bullet points of his life:
* Enormously popular, celebrated romance and adventure novelist and general writer, known best for such works s
Treasure Island and
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. A rabid storyteller from early childhood, eventually choosing this over the family heritage of engineers; but also studied law as a practical option.
* Credited his own style to "the exaggerated and romantic world" of his childhood.
* Only child, didn't fit in well at school. Moderate religious upbringing turned to adult atheism.
* Turned Bohemian as an adult, in attire and tastes, including frequenting pubs and brothels, all related to a philosophical view that he should reject what his parents had taught him.
* Marriage: At 29 after several years of involvement and adventures (long stories here, eventuating in his arrival in America / California).
* Moved to Samoa around age 40, the first place that felt like home and settled for him. Conditions there turned his writings toward darker realism.
* Health: "serious bronchial trouble [coughs, fevers] for much of his life," especially in cold, damp weather (it was hereditary), many severe periods that had him near death.
* Died young (age 44) in Samoa of a cerebral hemorrhage.
The Libra influences are quite obvious, though one has to look at them squarely: Besides his qualifying to practice law, the key is in his rejection of a family history of engineering for a career in the arts. He was frail - in many ways "unmanly," by the standards of his time and place - often rejected formal dress that might seem more Libran, but did so in exchange for a longer-hair, flowing and more comfortable look (a mingling of the Aquarius). It supports the idea of his frailty (without being the signal for it outright), just the broader
unmanly picture. - He was also a social futurist, a typical Libran expression (also matching Aquarius Moon), though his view of evolving social conditions had him turn more politically conservative as he aged. - Also, once married, he flourished in a new way: Marriage was a natural state of fulfillment for him.
Aquarius Moon, of course, was all over him, a pivotal key being his eventual choice to make a point of rejecting what his parents had taught him, to move toward the Bohemian, to affirm atheism as an act of escaping what he considered lies, plus his enormous curiosity and sense of
mental adventure. It is his living in an exaggerated, imaginative world. His writings are described as having "great range and insight," including adventure, outrageous realities, and social criticism, all of which sounds very Aquarius Moon.
Therefore, his Libra-Aquarius is well represented by this
Bohemian artist and social futurist and other traits mentioned above.
The most dynamic force in his chart is clearly the close, foreground Moon-Neptune conjunction. This shows in two remarkable themes: The scope of his physical frailty (including the fact that Neptune is the chief instigator of severe, chronic bronchial problems). It also speaks to his vast imagination.
Also regarding his health, he died of a sudden cerebral hemorrhage. What was the mark of this? I see three things but wish I had more medical information to choose between them. First, his Sun in Libra (the head) conjoined Mercury and Mars. Mars also closely opposes Pluto, which deals with strain. OTOH it may be as simple as the Moon-Neptune conjunction in Aquarius, since Aquarius is a common indicator for heart and blood-stream issues including (for example) hypertension. I suppose a study of his chart for his death (December 3, 1894, Samoa) might isolate this better.
Scorpio Mars' opposition to Pluto supports his Bohemian lifestyle (along with other chart factors), quietly radical and rejecting many social standards. Mars in Scorpio did not increase his overall strength and manliness, but surely gave him courage, perseverance, force of mission, and drive (not to mention wit). His Venus aspects to Uranus-Pluto seem to have settled partly in his youthful escapades, partly in his sense of fun and wonder (that pervaded much of his writing), but especially a general sense of social rebellion, i.e., rejecting conventional social standards.
I find no record of even a suspicion he was gay, which surprises me from his chart and his Bohemian context and opportunities. He was, however, a definite social rebel, outspoken and living his life contrary to society's views in his day.
To what can we attribute his great success, even from the start? (Talent doesn't guarantee success.) His Aquarian Moon certainly contributed a great gift of genius, especially in the Uranus-Neptune type of blend of Moon in Aquarius conjunct Neptune. Jupiter opposed Saturn - he did work extremely hard for his money - but, overall, there are no classic signs of outright success. (Though his popularity wavered in the 20th century for a while, he was highly regarded and praised during his life.) - Some would attribute success to fixed stars, but the main one I see of importance is a Sun paran with Denebola (consistent with his rebellious nature, but unnecessary to show it). Kenneth Bowser says that Moon's node aspecting angles shows great success or celebrity, and Stevenson did have Caput setting to the degree. - In the end, I think the successful mix was that he had genuine talent and persistently worked very hard.
His relocation to Samoa does nothing to his chart to make it seem so truly "home" to him for the first time in his life, unless his birth time is quite a bit off. The only angularity is Venus 7° from IC. The birth time is probably right, though, since the SLR that occurred a day after his death (and we would expect to be already in force) had Saturn 2°40' below Dsc, among other more general factors (Saturn opposed natal Pluto across the horizon).
His progressed Moon opposed his natal Uranus-Pluto, partile to each and 10' from their midpoint. Natal Neptune was on his SNQ Nadir. A benign and, actually, very positive SSR nonetheless brought SQ MC and Zenith to SSR Saturn (opposite natal Pluto) - Libra-Aries for the "head" axis. The even-half-hour birth time was pretty accurate.
