South Dakota's deadliest natural disaster ever was the 1972 Rapid City Flood aka the 1972 Black Hills Flood.

Intense rains began on the afternoon of June 9 and lasted until after midnight. Altogether, 15" of rain fell in 6 hours, surging Rapid Creek and related waterways. Rapid City was hit hardest when Canyon Lake Dam became clogged with debris during the night and failed. 238 people died, 3,057 injuries, and several bodies were never found. Over 1,335 homes were destroyed. Property damage exceeded $160M.
