Tropical Storm Camille [Flood]

Virginia's worst natural disaster ever was Hurricane Camille' or, as she was known by the time she hit Virginia, Tropical Storm Camille. I've already studied this hurricane in SMA for its place of initial landfall in Mississippi. However, it has a particular "worst" quality for Virginia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane ... e#Virginia

Hurricane Camille was the second, and second strongest, Category 5 hurricane to touch U.S. soil in the 20th Century. Making landfall in Mississippi, it ravaged the Gulf coast, levelling to the ground nearly everything in its path, and then spreading across larger stretches of the American southeast. Damages were $1.42 billion in 1969 dollars, equal to about $9 billion in 2015. Two hundred fifty-nine people died. Charts are poor for Washington, because longer term charts primarily reflected the great victory of the first Moon landing a few weeks earlier.

By the time it hit Virginia, Camille was no longer a hurricane. Nobody was expecting widespread damage from the degraded storm, but damage it did in fact cause. Heavy rains caused flash flooding, Virginia wasn't prepared for flash floods, and 153 people died "from blunt trauma sustained during mountain slides, related to the flash flooding, not drowning." (Possibly this needs to be grouped in the new FLOODS group I'll be starting.)

Camille reached Virginia August 19, 1969, "in the evening." It dumped torrential, deadly amounts of rain. I'll use 7:00 PM as a working time. I'll use Lovingston, the county seat of Nelson Co. where most of the deaths occurred.

I never will forget I was standing in a tunnel which happen to be in between the two wings of the Motel. I was looking an 1800’S home across the street and saw a 200-year Oak Tree lifted by its roots and fly away. I got really scarred in a hurry and though this may be it for me. After the winds subsided, I heard on the battery radio, winds were clocked in Gulfport Miss of 200 miles per hour, and then in Mobile at 110 miles per hour. I talked to a National Guardsman a month later, who was sent to help security control along the Miss coastline—he said the winds and water surge was so great—it ripped coffins out of their graves.
