1893 Sea Islands Hurricane [Hurricane]

Georgia and South Carolina share the same "worst disaster" of their history, the 1893 Sea Islands Hurricane, which killed between 1,000 and 2,000 people and caused $1M in damage across Georgia and South Carolina (about $27 billion in 2016 dollars). Storm surge was the main cause of death, and reached 16 feet (and probably 30 feet in some areas).

The hurricane made landfall in Georgia near Savannah, as a Cat 3 hurricane, on August 27, 1893. Though I haven't found a time of landfall, following the hurricane's tracks suggests early morning.

South Carolina was either hit the same day or (by one likely reliable source) on August 28. It passed north from Georgia and across South Carolina, particularly hitting the Sea Islands that give it its name. The worst reported seems to have been St. Helena Island, 32.376272N, 80.67.2228W, where hundreds tied and economic devastation echoed for decades.

It means all of them. Sixteen feet of water would have covered all of them and most of the coastline in the area as well. Hilton Head is one of the islands with the most elevation and it's only 9 feet above sea level at it's highest.
