A controlled burn was started on Cerro Grande in Los Alamos County on May 4, 2000 and "quickly got out of hand." Over the next several days it accelerated rapidly. The town of Los Alamos was evacuated May 10, 2000, with everyone to be out by noon. 235 homes burned that night. and, eventually, over 400 families in Los Alamos became homeless and over 48,000 acres burned (among much other damage). Total damages are estimated at $1B.
