At least 162 people have died (mostly from collapsing buildings) with 700 others injured. (These numbers likely will climb,) Magnitude 5.6, shallow. Poor construction and high population densities are blamed for the high casualty rate.

UPDATE 1/9/23: Two sources give either 335 or 635 people dead. 7,729 are still listed as missing.

A larger quake three days earlier (mag 6.9) occurred: November 18, 2022, 13:37:08 UT, near Bengkulu, Indonesia 4S53'30'' 100E48'12''. I don't yet know why this larger quake wasn't the problem one (probably where it hit).

The quake occurred with a precise Mars-Neptune angular: It mut have ben terrifying:
