Peshtigo Fire [Wildfire]

Post by Jim Eshelman »

Wisconsin's deadliest natural disaster ever is also the deadliest fire in U.S. history. It also has the distinction of occurring exactly the same day as the Great Chicago Fire and, therefore, has been mostly forgotten in popular awareness. Furthermore, major fires erupted the same day on the other side of Lake Michigan, in Holland and Manistee, MI; and yet there seems no physical causative connection among all these fires. (One theory, that Comet Biela passing near Earth, is widely rejected because comet fragments or meteorites are cool when they hit ground.)

The connecting factor is likely the extreme dryness of the season and strong winds, causing concurrent fires to spark in broadly adjacent areas. I'm interested, though, to see if there are overlapping astrological factors such as, say, a Mars line running right down the middle of Lake Michigan within reach of everything. (No, I haven't yet looked as I write this, and it's been too long since I've looked at the Great Chicago Fire charts to remember them.) [PS Peshtigo, in NE Wisconsin, is at precisely the same longitude as Chicago.]

The fire occurred October 8, 1871, centered in Peshtigo, WI. At least 1,500 people, and possibly as many as 2,500 died. The fire burned 1.2 million acres. As I can't find a time, I'll use noon.
