Sharpeville Massacre

Post by Jim Eshelman »

On March 21, 1960, in Sharpeville, South Africa (26S41, 27E52), shortly after 1:00 PM, police opened fire 5,000 to 7,000 black civil rights protesters, killing 69 and injuring 180 more. Reports vary as to whether the protesters remained peaceful before the shooting, though even neutral reports indicate that the crowd, which at one point reached 19,000 in size, had become hostile and threatening. This event triggered a week of widespread protests, strikes, and riots in South Africa, during which 18,000 people were arrested. International condemnation was strong, including formal censure by the United Nations.

Year: Capsolar
Jupiter (MC 0°39')
Venus (MC 6°48')
Mars (MC 8°19')
Moon-Neptune square (0°16')
It appears that this does not describe the event. Even if it were regarded as a victory for the nation (expressed through its police force), the world condemnation is not described by this chart.

Month: Caplunar
Jupiter (IC 0°44')
Mercury (Dsc 4°36')
Pluto (Asc 4°47')
-- Mercury opposite Pluto (mundo 0°11')
Ditto what was said for the Capsolar. - I take these two charts as showing the enhanced European sense of elitism that created the conditions causing these riots.

Fortnight: Canlunar
Dormant.

Week: Liblunar
Mercury (sq MC 0°35', Dsc 1°52')
Pluto (Asc 6°36')
Venus (Dsc 6°11')
-- Venus/Pluto midpoint 0°12' from horizon
Better symbolism: Confrontational, emotionally tragic.
