Though hardly history's worst maritime disaster, the sinking of the luxury liner SS Andrea Doria after its collision with the MS Stockholm is one of its most famous. The good news is that improved technology and safety measures kept loss of life to a minimum - 46 people died out of about 1,700 passengers and crew.

The collision occurred at 40N29.5, 69W51 on July 25, 1956 at about 11:10 PM. Time zone is unclear, but an SOS was sent from essentially the same coordinates at 3:20 GMT. That's puzzling, since 11:10 PM LMT (at one time the standard for "ship's time") would have been 3:50 GMT. I suspect, therefore, that the 11:10 PM report was stated in EST, which would make it 10 minutes before the SOS. I'm going to treat this as EST. (Small differences in timing won't impact the techniques studied below.)

Overall the charts are extraordinary, although they suddenly get mysteriously thin at the level of daily indications, which usually are the strongest. (I don't mind the huge Jupiter transit to the Capsolar: This was a major luxury liner, we saw much the same thing when the Titanic sailed through an area, and loss of life was held to under 3%).

In his introduction of the PSSI Arisolar, Bradley used the Andrea-Doria (Richard Murakami's favorite disaster) as one of his two examples.

He had coordinates a few minutes different from those I used, and a time of 3:22 UT on the 26th, which is about the time the SOS was sent. I found above that the Capsolar was pretty useless in final timing, and the CanQ pulled Mercury and Saturn. The PSSI Arisolar turned up Mars on quotidian MC, squared by Neptune.

Testing the mean rate (instead of the apparent rate Bradley used, I get this within acceptable orbs also; in fact, I don't recall that Bradley mentioned Uranus, which makes this a little better. (I used the estimation system, I might be a few minutes off.)
