With Hurricane Dora not far off the coast driving winds at ferocious levels and dry local conditions, horrendous wildfires spread local brush fires like flash paper across Maui causing vast damage, significant loss of life, and great horror. As one friend of mine on the island wrote this week, "You go to sleep in paradise and wake up in hell."

Other parts of Hawaii, including Oahu, also have fires, though the almost inconceivable horror seems limited to Maui.

So far, 99 people are known to have been killed, while 1,300 are still missing - so the death toll likely will climb considerably. So far, over 17,000 acres have burned and over 2,000 buildings have been destroyed (ncluding historical landmarks) at a cost of $6 billion (a number that is still climbing and AFAIK does not include future loss of tourist trade). The death toll is already greater than any U.S. wildfire since the Cloquet fire in 1918.

On Monday, August 7, 5:00 AM HST, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for parts of Maui, citing "very dry fuels combined with strong and gusty easterly windows and low humidities" that could "produce critical fire weather conditions through Tuesday night." However, the first Maui fire appears to have started August 4 at 11:01 AM HST: Though it was mostly contained within a few hours, other fires broke out simultaneously. On August 8, by 4:55 PM 30 downed power poles on Maui had interrupted power to thousands of people. Of all the fires that started breaking out (forcing evacuation orders), the most significant seems to be the burning of Lahaina by fires that started early morning August 8 (first reported 6:37 AM HST). Though temporarily contained, this fire surged and increased, being the start of the fiery devastation that followed. - I will use this fire as the event to study.

The solar ingresses are a mixed batch, but the one lunar ingress is exactly right - it nails it. Daily timing is then confusing, partly because this is stretched across many days, partly because hurricane-related markers start to intrude, and perhaps partly just wrong. - BTW, the Venus-Uranus aspect that is the most consistent presence through these charts was also on the angles exactly when the above fire began.

Year: Capsolar {+1}
(This event actually fits literally what I've published for Venus-Uranus supplemented by Saturn, though I don't want to over-rate it. If it didn't so literally match my published interpretation, I wouldn't know how to rate this. - Curiously, Saturn's exaltation degree is rising.)
Uranus on Dsc 0°09'
Venus on IC 0°32'
Saturn widely foreground
-- Venus-Uranus sq 0°23' M
Moon-Pluto sq 1°00' M

Bridge
(Not bad for the hurricane but entirely wrong for the fire.)
t Uranus op Capsolar EP-a 1°33'
t Jupiter op Capsolar MC 0°40'

Quarter: Arisolar {+2}
(Perfect symbolism!)
Venus on WP-a 0°47'
Saturn on IC 3°24'
-- Venus-Saturn sq 0°39'
Moon-Uranus sq 2°44'

Month: Caplunar (Dormant.) Moon-Pluto.
Week: Arilunar (Dormant,)

Week: Liblunar
(Perfect!)
Mars on Dsc 2°40'
Saturn on Asc 4°23'
-- Mars-Saturn op. 1°43' M

NOTE: The August 14 Canlunar continued the pattern (horror plus news coverage):
Mercury on Z 0°08'
Neptune on IC -2°03'
Mars on MC +3°43'
-- Ma/Ne on meridian 0°50'
-- Mercury-Mars co 3°29'
Moon-Pluto op 2°00' M

Day: Capsolar Quotidian & Transits {+1 or +2 / -2 = -1}
(Mars is a little far, though fires had already been burning. I'd rather see this more exact for the outbreak of this specific fire. But the transits to the Capsolar, while emphasizing the original appropriate aspects, turned far too positive for me to credit it points. It's quite wrong. -- PS, if I were looking at it as a hurricane chart, for Hurricane Dor, the Jupiter would be appropriate.)
p Asc sq s Neptune 1°12'
p MC sq p Mars 2°09'
----------------------------------
t Uranus op s EP-a 1°33'
t Jupiter op s MC 0°40'
-- t Jupiter co s Uranus 0°33'
t Sun co s MC 0°43'
-- t Sun op s Venus 0°'21'
-- t Sun sq s Uranus 0°54'

Day: Cansolar Quotidian & Transits (Dormant.)

In "credit where it's due" department, the August 1 Full Moon for Lahaina had Mars just over 1° from Ascendant. It's a no-nonsense, clear as can be chart. One might also want to notice the more widely foreground 0°26' Mercury-Saturn opposition. (A major complaint through all of this is, "This word didn't get out.")

Furthermore, the Summer Solstice chart for the quarter beginning June 21 had Saturn 2°34' off Midheaven paran Mercury 1°08' off Ascendant.
