Mideast 1979

In an insightful commentary on recent decades of Mideast geopolitical shifts, NY Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman, who was on the ground in Beirut in 1979, recently wrote a summary of events and their cultural and geopolitical import.

I plan to extract some events from this, do a little research, and see what the whole thing looked like astrologically.
EVENTS
1. In 1979, Islamist extremists took overt the Grand Mosque in Mecca and challenged the religious credentials of the Saudi ruling family. A deal was cut.
2. In 1979, Iran's Islamic Revolution propelling Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to power.
3. In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.
