In Mecca today, at 5:45 PM, a crane collapsed (at the Masjid al-Haram - the Grand Mosque surrounding the Kaaba) killing at least 65 people and injuring at least 154 others.

I'm tagging on to this thread for this morning's additional event in Mina (near Mecca). Today, at about 9:00 AM local time, hundreds of people were crushed to death in a stampede for the first day of the Hajj. At last count I've seen, 717 people were killed and 863 injured by the stampede. [EDIT 12/11/15: The number has increased to 2,411, according to AP. Saudi Arabia has had a news blackout on the matter.]
