This is the quake referenced whenever news sources say the recent Taiwan quake was "the worst in 20 years," meaning that there was one 20 years ago that was worse. The epicenter was near Jiji, Taiwan. The quake was magnitude 7.3 or 7.7, depending on which measurement scale is used. Locally it remains known as the "921 earthquake."

2,415 people died. 11,305 were injured. 29 remain missing, so they're likely dead. 51,711 buildings were destroyed and another 53,768 seriously damaged. Damages were NT$300 billion.
