William T. Golden

Post by Jim Eshelman »

William T. Golden was born October 25, 1909, hour unknown, in New York City. He died of lymphoma October 7, 2007, also in NYC. Golden was notable for two distinctive sets of accomplishments: First, he was a canny investor and businessman who earned a significant fortune from his investments beginning in the 1930s. Second, he applied his fortune to the goal of forwarding science and, particularly, of bringing key scientists and scientific groups into contact with political leaders at the local, national, and international level.

For example, he was instrumental in the creation of the National Science Foundation. He got President Truman to create the post (which continues through the present) of national science adviser to the President. He worked with figures as diverse as Albert Einstein, Al Gore, and Dalai Lama. Ten years out of college he had met his goal "to make a lot of money on Wall Street and then do interesting things," the LA Times quoted him as saying.

Even without a birth time we can see his horoscope marking, first, his business acumen. The Libra Sun and the close Mars-Pluto square are the chief indicators.

The direction of his interests is shown by his Aquarius Moon. Additionally, Mars in Pisces is one of the least scientific placements one can have and, despite his deep interest in science, Golden knew he didn't have what it would take to be a scientist - so he took a different approach of leveraging his wealth to being an activist for science's advancement.

Other interesting combinations exist in the nativity for those who want to dig.

Pluto had been squaring his Mars, a common transit for hospitalizations - and mostly just a huge amount of energy and strain, more than most 97-year-old bodies could sustain. Various transits were in orb the day of his death, but, without a time for his chart, it's hard to say that any of them had anything directly to do with the end of his final illness. Progressed Moon may have been a factor - if he was born in the morning, then it was opposite Saturn and square natal Neptune for his death; or if in early afternoon, then square Uranus. (I suspect he was born around 8 AM.)
