Hurricane Helene made Florida landfall as the most severe hurricane - a Category 4 storm - ever to hit the Big Bend area, and has continued its march northward across Georgia. Wind speeds at landfall were 140 mph.

UPDATED Oct 4: Death toll at least 221 (nearly half of them in North Carolina) [UPDATE 12/8: 234]. At least 286 missing [UPDATE 12/8: 26]. At least $27.5 billion in damages. Hundreds of roads are washed out or untraversable. Over 1.5 million households are still without electricity. Hurricane Helene is now the second-deadliest mainland hurricane in the past 50 years (after Hurricane Katrina). [12/8: Unofficial estimates by the state are $113.5 billion. Official estimate is "to be determined."]

Insured losses could reach as high as $3-6 billion. Before landing, Helene already battered Florida with dangerous wind and rain. It will be days before we have an update on its total impact. Landfall came amidst several near-angularities but nearly the minute Saturn crossed Zenith.
