An uprising mob of Tory rioters burned Canada's Parliament buildings while legislators were still in session (and Montreal was the capital). The positive outcome was that the PMs handled the event led directly to Canada's democratic federal system years later. The immediate cause of the uprising was passage of the controversial Rebellion Losses Bill to indemnify property owners in Lower Canada for events during the rebellions of 1837. (There was a complicated right vs. left disagreement fueling the controversy of the bill.)

Anyway, rioters set the complex aburning. The riot began the evening of April 25, continued for two days, and involved thousands of people causing thousands of 1849 dollars worth of damage. Sunset was about 7 PM so I'm estimating 8 PM.
