Sharpeville massacre

After protesting a new, restrictive law, 5,000 to 7,000 black protestors gathered 0utside the Sharpeville police station. They were there for an initially peaceful, civilly disobedient protest, and the tone was described as festive. As the crowd expanded to about 20,000 (in contrast to only 20 police officers), things became more tense (some say ugly), and 130 police reinforcements were called in, as well as armored vehicles. Some spark set off shooting, leading to deaths of 69 people (including women and children), with another 180 injured. (That "spark" might have been Mars crossing the upper meridian.)
