The deadliest hot air balloon crash in U.S. history (and second deadliest in the world) occurred July 30, 2016, at approximately 7:40 AM CDT near Lockhart, TX (specifically at 29N52'57", 97W42'41"). All 16 people aboard died. The balloon caught fire and then eventually crashed.
The current dominant theory is that the balloon (which was seen flying low shortly before) became caught in power lines and then caught fire. Since two gun-like popping sounds were heard by witnesses, there is another view that someone shot at the balloon, though this could have been caused by something else as the balloon failed. I suspect we'll hear results of police, FBI, or NTSB investigations over the next couple of days.
