Prestonsburg bus disaster

The deadliest two-vehicle disaster in U.S. history (not even tied until 30 years later) occurred February 28, 1958, about 8:15 AM, in Prestonsburg, KY. There had been heavy frozen rains and a thaw, but contemporary reports say the pavement was dry. A school bus rear-ended a wrecker truck that was trying to extricate a stuck car. The bus rolled down an embankment into the swollen Big Sandy River, was swept downstream, and eventually sank. 27 of the 49 passengers died.
Timing is from an account of one of the students, who said she was picked up at about 8:10, and the collision occurred 200 yards down the highway.
