A powerful explosion went off in the Chelsea area of New York City a while ago. So far, 29 are reported injured and no deaths are reported.

A group of my friends was a block away at an event. One friend had stepped out to grab a drink and was half a block away. He said people were in the street and bleeding. Police told my friends that it was probably an IED. I don't have a time, but they texted me at 10:26 PM EDT and had already had time to leave their event, gather and touch base at the sidewalk, and confirm that everyone had a safe place to go.

UPDATE: NY Times now reports it was at 8:30 PM, at 133 West 23rd Street. That would be 40N44'36'', 73W59'46''. Uranus was on EP when it went off, and Capsolar Mars was setting.

UPDATE 9/18: According to the governor, this is "not an international terrorist event" (though the FBI are still investigating). A second, similarly constructed bomb was found four blocks away. This bomb was powerful enough that "it caused extensive property damage on both sides of the street, shattering windows up and down the block and sending shrapnel and debris flying" (NYT). Nobody died. For those who know Manhattan, you can imagine the impact on a Saturday night when police closed down traffic between 14th and 32nd Streets, and between Fifth and Eighth Avenues.

A question is whether this is related to another bomb planting nearby earlier in the day. About 9:30 AM the same day, across the river in Seaside Park, New Jersey, three pipe bombs were planted (one went off), nobody was hurt. Then, last night, a backpack was found in Elizabeth, NJ at a train station, and it contained five bombs.

UPDATE: The named, apprehended suspect in the Manhattan blasts is now also named as wanted in the New Jersey bomb plantings.
