1916 Texas Hurricane

Post by Jim Eshelman »

August 18, 1916, 6:50 PM, near Baffin Bay in Texas (use 27N15, 97W31)

This was the most intense hurricane (i.e., measured in barometric pressure) to strike the U.S. in 30 years. Besides Texas, it created much damage in Jamaica (where it made first landfall while still very weak). It struck Texas as a Category 4 with sustained winds near its 135 mph peak, with gusts at least 90 mph.

Altogether 24 deaths, $28.6 million in damages ($1.6 million in Texas).
