1693 Sicily earthquake

Post by Jim Eshelman »

1693 Jan 11, 9:00 PM LMT, epicenter approximately 37.3N, 15.1E
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1693_Sicily_earthquake

The highest magnitude earthquake in Italy's history (7.4). Felt in eastern Sicily, Malta, and Calabria, shaking lasted 4 minutes. A foreshock (magnitude 6.2) struck two days earlier, causing widespread destruction and 200 deaths. Tsunamis 15-30 feet high "devastated the coastal villages on the Ionian Sea and in the Straits of Messina." Aftershocks continued three years with strong aftershocks (sometimes as strong as the original quake) for 20 months.

60,000 deaths. Destroyed "at least 70 towns and cities," requiring towns in southeast Sicily be substantially rebuilt.

The event chart (for the given time of 9:00 PM and for the epicenter) shows the tsunami better than the quake. (It matches what I think a tsunami chart would look like very well.) - The event angles (for an approximate time) are very close to the strikingly solid CapQ angles.
