Relying on Astrodienst or other free astrological software means one has some limitations. Perhaps the most glaring limitation is not knowing the true mundane positions of the planets for a given time and place. As Jim Eshelman teaches us, a mundoscope must always accompany a horoscope.
Janus 5 has a free, 30-day trial that can be downloaded. I've seen it mentioned on the forum in passing, but I thought it deserved more attention since it can be so helpful to many of us who currently can't or won't purchase astrological software.
I suggest gathering all the data you want to work with beforehand, in order to make the most out of the trial period.
For what it's worth.
Janus 5's 30-day trial
Re: Janus 5's 30-day trial
Without a doubt, if one is going to make a final decision to pursue a lifetime in the study/practice of astrology, one needs a professional astrological program. If one is going to pursue a serious study of Sidereal Astrology, I would purchase either Janus or Solarfire, but since Jim is the only professional Sidereal Astrologer who has a teaching forum for Sidereal Astrology, and he mainly uses Solarfire, I would highly recommend the choice of Solarfire.
When I first made a decision to pursue a serious study of Sidereal Astrology years before Jim's forum, it took me many weeks to become familiar with Solarfire in order to know how to calculate the many charts/techniques used in Sidereal Astrology. I was very lucky to cross paths with a former colleague of Jim who took many weeks of his time slowly instructing me through e-mails how to use Solarfire. And then, when I first joined this forum, I learned other very important functions from Jim with Solarfire that broaden my knowledge of Sidereal Astrology. Seriously studying Sidereal Astrology with its hard to find books is one major obstacle, but another obstacle is learning how to function all the techniques of Sidereal Astrology with a professional astrological program. A small pamphlet is actually needed imo for specific step by step Solarfire detailed instructions for calculating all the Sidereal Astrology Charts/techniques, but for now the Solarfire Tips Topic on this forum will have to do. If any learning member on this needs help with step by step Solarfire instructions, I will be glad to help. Jim is also a licensed Janus user and can help with Janus users wanting to know how to function Sidereal Astrology techniques. I am also a licensed Janus user and can help.

Steve, why don't you write what could basically be an online booklet on the Tips and Tricks Forum. Start your own thread - "The methods I learned to use Solar Fire for Sidereal astrology", perhaps. Just the technical details people need to use the program. Maybe include the emails you got from Matthew. (It could be part of his legacy.)
I think it would be a great contribution to this forum, and Sidereal astrology in general.

I should add, though, that Ken Bowser (who uses both Janus and SF) has arranged a deal with Janus: Those who buy his new book, The Western Sidereal Astrology Interpretation Workbook (which is really a natal interpretation course more than just a book) get a discount on buying Janus. I think it's a 30% discount. (I still have a review of that book that I want to write and post here.)SteveS wrote: Sun Mar 28, 2021 7:22 am Without a doubt, if one is going to make a final decision to pursue a lifetime in the study/practice of astrology, one needs a professional astrological program. You are so right-on Jupe, it would be a good contribution for this forum of Sidereal Astrology. My posting time has been greatly curtailed because I can't sit in my office where my main desk top computer is located. For the last few months I have been confined to laying flat on my back in bed typing my posts on an old laptop that I think is near death mode. I have got to discuss my Back situation with the best neurosurgeon in my area and there is a long line waiting to see him and for the robotic Back surgery he is well known for. The only time I am completely out of pain is when I am walking and at my age I can only walk so far on any given day. Many days--weather prevents walking. If robotic surgery does not bring my normal mobility back to me, I am going to have to invest several thousand of $ to completely redo bedroom and bath in order to better cope with this confining Back situation. For me, posting flat on my back in bed is very slow and cumbersome, it cramps my neck and back muscles, but I have gotten some new ice packs specifically designed for my physical condition which is greatly reducing the extent of my pain in bed. I can lay on one side in a certain position without pain but can't type in this position. I have been doing a-lot of visual listening/reading online in bed which has certain benefits for my Virgo mind/soul, and greatly helps pass the time of day. I am learning some new speculative circumstantial evidence that has peaked my interest for the last 40 years of my life. I am also communicating with a new set of people (e-mails) who have gained my respect over the many years pertaining to their life passions and business. But I digress--i do need to help other potential Sidereal Astrologers with specific detailed Solarfire instructions. ThanksI think it would be a great contribution to this forum, and Sidereal astrology in general.

If you have the surgery, Steve, do you know when this would be? In the other thread, I just found some strikingly positive periods for you mid-July.

Jim, I have no idea when I would have this surgery (if qualified) but you will be the first to know.

Steve, check into dictation software. Maybe it might help.
Re: Janus 5's 30-day trial
Yes, If surgery cannot correct, I have thought about dictation software as an option. Long lasting pain shots is an option but I have heard some negative, as well as positive feedback from others. From an astrological standpoint, it appears to me the long lasting t Pluto partile 180 my natal Mars has me trapped in a long waiting pain process awaiting my appointment with the neurosurgeon for final decisions. I also think Covid has backed things-up with certain low priority surgeries.

I think dictation software would be worthwhile while you are waiting for and while you are healing from surgery. I think some of it you can get a trial period. You can try a couple, see if you like any of it.
I realize getting and installing even a trial version might be overwhelming right now

I agree Jupe.
