Beatlemania

Post by Jim Eshelman »

I see I've never studied this gigantic mass-mind event. Probably that's due to it being spread across many months. I think, though, that we can concentrate the timing of Beatlemania in the U.S. with the Fab 4's landing in New York City and first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show (even though one of their songs was already the No. 1 hit in the U.S. by mid-January).

They landed at JFK (where 4,000 fans awaited them) February 7, 1964, landing at 1:20 PM. They appeared on Ed Sullivan's show, before 73 million viewers, February 9, 1964. The show, which has long been considered a cultural watershed moment, began at 8:00 PM and the Beatles started playing at 8:12 PM.

For purposes of point-in-time study, I'm going to date Beatlemania as beginning February 9, 1964, 8:12 PM EST, in Manhattan at CBS Studio 50 (the current Ed Sullivan Theater) at 40N45'50" 73W58'58".

The Bridge and daily timing are quite strange - they look like an all-out violent assault which, by some reports, isn't wrong. Nonetheless, I've rated the severely negative charts negatively (and the extremely positive ones positively).

That Caplunar nails it, IMO. :)
