Time zone Correction field

Post by Veronica »

I am working on running a few charts with this program and i have played around with entering different numerals in the field for time zone, but I am not getting the correct charts (mine).
Time zones are very confusing for me, and I guess my question is first, what exactly needs to be entered in these fields/boxes? The first box seems to be asking what time zone, does it not intuit the time zone based on the lat and Long? I am in the Eastern daylight time, which when entered gives me an error.
In the next series of boxes for TZ correction it seems to be asking for Hours, minutes, and seconds which I do not know, nor do i know where to go to get these answers. I looked in the help section and there was no mention or clue as to what I should be entering. which i feel would be especially helpful for students like me to be able to try and learn astrology. I'm sure professionals already know and understand all these nuances but for a newbie struggling to really grok what is being calculated and how, it is a stumbling block.
So, for example you can tell me what my local TZ info to enter into the fields, and I can enter and draw up a chart, but that doesn't teach me to fish for myself and learn what to enter for other people or places. How do I know what to put into these fields? Do I need to actually have an atlas in front of me to find the necessary info? Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Veronica, based on the time and location you provided, this is the data you need to enter.

Yes, tune zone info is entered automatically if it's in the program's data base, which I think starts in 1980. Before that (and after the 1880s) you have to enter it manually.

The first field is just a label. In theory you can type whatever you want as a label, though recommended are the standard time zone abbreviations EST, EDT, CST, CDT, etc.

The three time fields are the time that your time zone varies from GMT. During sundial time (LAT), then the almost century of LMT, you have to have hours, minutes, and seconds; and some time zones today are half-hour increments (like Iranian Standard Time). Mostly, though, you'll use whole houra: 5:00:00 for EST but 4:00:00 for EDT, etc.

Thanks Lyse and Jim,
I think I recall that Tm will actually input these fields if you click the find button. I thought the find button was only for finding the locations Lat and Lon.
This is helpful thank you, but I am still struggling with how do I know the TZ or time differences between lets say, Chicago, and San Fransico, or London and Romania?
Honestly, I would like to someday be able to cast charts without a program and do it the old-fashioned way, with lots of pencil and paper. While I like the ease and convenience of these programs to run the charts correctly, I feel I am doing myself a disservice in understanding time and movement by trusting them to work and not doing the work myself.

It will find LAT, long, time Provided the time info is in the data base. From something like 1888 to 1979, it's not covered.

Veronica, you can access ‘How to Cast a Natal Chart’ by Jeff Mayo from the Internet Archive. You might find it useful.
