What is a progressed chart and how can it be used. What should I look for in a progressed chart?

There are several variations of progressions, but they boil down to “taking some base chart, and advancing the points in it at some rate.” For example, the most common type, secondary progressions, works like this: for every year of your actual life, your progressed chart advances by one day. If you work out that rate, that’s how much slower the progressed planets move than the real ones.

Progressions show the natural evolution or unfolding of something. You look for aspects between progressed planets within 1°, and aspects from progressed planets to natal planets within 1°. Progressed sun and moon are also sensitive to transits.

There’s more stuff possible with them, and there are a variety of progression rates that are used in different techniques (with varying results). There’s a variant of lunar returns, kinetic lunar returns, that operate by transiting moon conjoining/opposing progressed moon instead of natal moon.

Exactly so. Progressions appear to be natural unfolding intrinsic traits (natural developments rather than matters arising from interaction with the environment). James, you've had a number of important progressions ripen over the last few years, and not much right now. Here are your current secondary progressions inside your natal chart, displayed on a 90° dial so that conjunctions, oppositions, and squares all appear at the same place, making these easier to see.

Per year these positions move the same distance that planets moved on the 41st day after your birth. The one exact contact right now is progressed Mercury (21°49' Capricorn) square progressed Saturn (21°51') almost exactly. This marks, for example, a stage of life when mental attention is drawn more inward, perhaps brooding; outward circumstances may suffer a bit as one grapples with them less, being more introspective than extrospective.

I find it more interesting, though, to see what you've been through in recent years and what is coming up soon. Notice that progressed Venus (6°03' Capricorn at the moment) squared your Mars a couple of years ago and will move into orb of square natal and progressed Pluto within the next year or so. The progressed Mercury-Saturn square will become a progressed Mercury-Mars square in a couple of years. More recently - about two months ago - you had a progressed Moon-Jupiter square, usually an unusually fortunate time (progressed Moon moves about 1°/month).

These can also be presented as a list of exact progressed dates, although (as Ember Nyx said) these last through a 1° orb coming and going. Here are exact secondary progressions (sticking to conjunctions, oppositions, and squares) in recent years (excluding the fast and more frequent progressed Moon aspects):

James, if I were you I would ask Jim to look into the Progressed Composite Charts for you and your new acquaintance. May be interesting to see if any angular symbolism?
