January 12, 2010, 4:53:10 pm EST, 18N28, 72W32 (epicenter near Port-au-Prince)

7.0 magnitude earthquake with epicenter near Leogane, about 16 miles west of Port-au-Prince. In the next dozen days, 52 aftershocks occurred of magnitude 4.5 or greater.

Between 100,000 and 160,000 people died; or, according to the Haitian government, between 220-316,000 (numbers that are widely thought inflated). Port-au-Prince and other cities were horribly damaged. Despite sizeable humanitarian aid, the area was plagued with hunger and sickness, plus widespread inhumanity, for years.

The quake struck a few minutes after a stationary Saturn (partile square Pluto) crossed IC.
