Do you mean natal Sun-Mars, Sun-Mars by transit, or other? I imagine you haven't thought that through, so I'm stirring the question in your mind. Let's use this response to start to draw some of those distinctions.
Regardless of context, the core principle of Sun-Mars aspects is:
Male essence. Heroic ideal. Identity linked to power.
Especially, it's about the energy, aggression, etc. linked to one's ego or sense of identity. Sun represents our
individuation needs - the need to be a distinguished,
particular person and to have all of the components of one's being centered and concentrated in one place. Mars represents our
power needs, a category in which psychologists include needs for aggression, dominance, controlling others, opposition, independence, and defense.
When you put these together, a typical expression when Sun closely aspects Mars in a
natal chart is:
NATAL Sun-Mars wrote:Action, drive, accomplishment, vitality, courage. Restless, forthright, direct (perhaps hasty, impatient, temperamental, low frustration tolerance). Strong physical aggression (for business, sex, etc.). Industrious, instinctively leads or commands, thus often promoted.
Natal aspects are about
who one fundamentally is. They don't show life events so much as the nature of your character
except that
who you are affects
how you act. For example, a
feisty person is more likely to have fights, right? But let's keep clear that it's really about underlying character than events. (The events are secondary.)
We can contrast this to Sun-Mars and Mars-Sun transits. Here is a contrast of the typical expression of
transiting Sun aspecting natal Mars vs.
transiting Mars aspecting natal Sun. (They are similar but distinctive.)
T Sun to N Mars wrote:Active, energetic, aggressive, competitive, strong-willed, willing to risk. Probably accomplishing. Challenge or conflict likely. Sex drive emphatic. Energy high; but may burn out from not knowing when to quit.
T Mars to N Sun wrote:Active, aggressive, strenuous, sexual, competitive. Endurance high; but you tend to “burn both ends,” depleting resources. Circumstances demand immediate action; possible crisis. You are more irritating to others; be tactful!
See how similar
and how different they are?
By now, though, you likely can see the similar themes that come up in different expressions of Sun + Mars. From this, we can turn to your particular questions.
does it mean heated debate?
This is an
event, so it refers more to transits (or another category of Sun-Mars such as a Sun-Mars aspect in a lunar return). The answer yes, it can mean that: It can mean any sort of intense competition. And, as a natal aspect it shows one who is competitive, so (if they are verbal and taken with that mode of interaction) are more likely to be drawn toward debate.
Does it mean high intelligence?
(This one applies to a natal aspect.) That's a really interesting question because there's a lot of evidence that intelligence has a lot to do with energy! We normally wouldn't interpret it that way, but I think you'll find a lot of Sun-Mars people that you assess as unusually intelligent.
Intelligence is primarily a solar characteristic (in contrast to the
intellectual Mercury). Think of the soldier or the high-performing athlete, who are representative Sun-Mars types: These aren't just brutes going for blood, they are effective, resourceful, alert, often quick-thinking, etc.
As i think through this I remember that the same neurological circuits that help us identify something
foreign, strange, unfamiliar - the animal reflex that looks at a scene or situation, registers
difference and categorizes it as "enemy, threat, be wary" instead of "food, safe, friend" - this same circuit makes our senses more acute, poises us for quicker response and action. This
keener observation, acuity, quick assessment, and quick response either is, or looks like, intelligence.
Does it mean strong conversation?
Usually not. (Conversation may be its tool,
e.g., to get laid or research a foe or enact leadership, etc. But it's not Sun-Mars
per se.)
(I'm making guesses
Does it mean loss of life sometimes?
Guesses are good, but you improve your thinking about things when you base it on solid principles and, especially,
observation.
Loss of Life? I laugh because we really need to distinguish what kind of Sun-Mars you mean. If you mean
natal Sun-Mars, then I have to say a quick Yes because statistics show that 100% of people with natal Sun-Mars aspects die. If you mean transits, then I'd change my answer and say that one expression can be injury and injury can sometimes lead to loss of life.
